A ruling has been issued from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)<\/a> that makes the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs)<\/a> mandatory for most drivers and motor carriers. To be considered compliance, carriers currently using papers logs must<\/u> have ELDs installed and<\/em> in use by December 18, 2017.<\/p>\n

According to the official definition by the FMCSA, an electronic logging device (or ELD)<\/a> is “technology that automatically records a driver\u2019s driving time and other aspects of the hours-of-service (HOS) records.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The device synchronizes with the engine of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) to record driving time and monitors important information such as location, vehicle movement, engine hours, and miles driven.<\/p>\n
